Fort Aguada

Fort Aguada was built by the Portuguese in 1612 to defend Goa against the Dutch and other rivals, guarding the mouth of the Mandovi river. Its name comes from the Portuguese for water: the fort held a large freshwater reservoir that resupplied passing ships, and reviewers still single out the vast underground water tank as one of its most striking features. In the 19th century a lighthouse was added, described by visitors as the oldest of its kind in Asia, and in later years part of the complex served as a prison.

Visitors consistently rank Fort Aguada among Goa's most famous historical landmarks, and the appeal is a mix of history and setting. Perched on a hill overlooking the Arabian Sea, it offers what many call some of the best views in North Goa, and most say a visit takes a couple of unhurried hours. It rewards travellers who want a genuine heritage stop rather than just a beach, with the walls, the water works and the lighthouse all part of the walk.

What visitors describe is a well-preserved fort of massive stone ramparts set on a clifftop, with the lighthouse and the great freshwater cistern as the set-piece features. The hilltop position is the draw as much as the structure: wide, open views over the sea and coastline in most directions.
